We can't continue like this - Somanya residents cry over weeks-long water crisis

Somanya residents have petitioned the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) to intervene in an ongoing water crisis affecting communities for several weeks. Hundreds of households have been without potable water after a major water pipeline supplying the area was damaged by a contractor working on the Adjikpo-Asitey section of the Somanya-Kpong road project. Repair works on the damaged pipeline have stalled because the contractor responsible for the damage has not yet provided funds to restore the facility.

The delay has forced some residents to rely on water from the untreated Onuma Stream, which flows from Adjikpo through Agavenya and Sawyer to the Mount Mary College of Education junction. Concerns have been raised about the safety of the stream water, citing pollution from open drains and activities involving animals. Those unwilling to use the stream water have resorted to buying borehole water from tanker operators at costs ranging between GH¢250 and GH¢300. Residents told Channel One TV that the water shortage has affected households, educational institutions, businesses, and other establishments, forcing many to travel long distances daily for alternative water sources.
