Waste crisis looms as Greater Accra relies on two landfills
Dr Peter Kwesi Dagadu, Managing Director of Landfills Company Limited, disclosed that the Greater Accra Region currently depends on only two major landfill sites to manage daily waste volumes. He explained that one of the two facilities is located within the Greater Accra Region, while the other is situated in the neighbouring Eastern Region but also serves the capital. Dr Dagadu stated, "Within the footprint of the Greater Accra Region, we have the Kpone dumpsite, but just outside in the Eastern Region, we have the Adepa landfill site which also serves the Greater Accra Region, and so essentially, there are two major disposal sites servicing the entire Greater Accra Region."
Dr Dagadu further revealed that the Kpone landfill has reached the end of its operational lifespan and is expected to be closed within the next six months. He noted that the Adepa landfill, which covers about 120 acres, has the capacity to process and accommodate up to 4,000 tonnes of waste daily. The limited number of disposal facilities has placed significant pressure on the region's waste management system.
