Unemployed man jailed for attempting to steal police armoured vehicle
Ebenezer Frimpong, a 26-year-old unemployed man, was sentenced to one month in prison by the Kwadaso Circuit Court in Kumasi for attempting to steal a police armoured vehicle at Nkawie in the Atwima Nwabiagya South Municipality of the Ashanti Region. He was arrested on April 15, 2026, after allegedly taking possession of the police vehicle. Frimpong changed his plea from not guilty to guilty during court proceedings on Tuesday, July 21, following a psychiatric examination by doctors at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, which found him fit to stand trial.
On April 14, 2026, General Lance Corporal Joshua Denkyi, a police driver, was transporting an armoured police vehicle with registration number GP 1131 to a workshop for servicing. The officer developed a stomach upset and parked the vehicle near the Nkawie Market to purchase medication. Moments later, the officer spotted Frimpong driving the vehicle towards the Nkawie-Abuakwa-Kumasi road. An alarm was raised, and with assistance from regional MTTD motor riders, the suspect was arrested at Mim, near Abuakwa. Frimpong had earlier pleaded not guilty on May 5, 2026, before the same court. When asked by the presiding judge whether he understood the consequences of his decision, he answered in the affirmative.
