Underdogs, history and late goals - Africa's World Cup
Africa sent its largest ever contingent to the 2026 Fifa World Cup. Confederation of African Football (Caf) boss Patrice Motsepe said that after nine nations made it into the knockout stage, they had made the continent's 1.6 billion people proud. Only Morocco made it to the quarter-finals, while five sides exited after conceding late goals. Senegal and Egypt squandered two-goal leads.
The Egyptians and DR Congo registered their first wins at a World Cup. Cape Verde, Ivory Coast, and South Africa got past the group stage for the first time. Cape Verde reached the last 32 after draws against Spain, Uruguay, and Saudi Arabia. They lost 3-2 after extra time against Argentina. Goalkeeper Vozinha's Instagram followers went from 50,000 to over 29 million, and a newly-discovered species of sea slug was named after him. The World Cup will return to Africa in 2030, with Morocco co-hosting alongside Spain and Portugal.
