Uganda's Daily Monitor, NTV were forced off air after the army chief ordered their closure. Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba, son of President Yoweri Museveni, stated on X: "I DO NOT believe in a free press! The press should be guided by cadres of the revolution." He also said his "great father" gave him the "power to shut down any media house I want to" and that NTV and Daily Monitor would "not re-open without my permission."
Armed soldiers were stationed outside the Daily Monitor headquarters in Kampala, and Spark TV was also taken off air. The outlets are part of the Nation Media Group. Gen Kainerugaba added that "From now on ALL media in Uganda will follow the rules!" The Daily Monitor reported on X that the closure occurred "in a crackdown during the wee hours of Sunday." Staff reported that "no-one was allowed to enter or leave the compound." President Museveni, 81, took power about 40 years ago and won a record seventh term in January.
