Two people arrested for galamsey close to Agenda 111 Hospital
Yussif Ibrahim was arrested after one of his employees, arrested during an operation, identified him as his boss. The arrest occurred close to an Agenda 111 hospital project site at Adansi Asokwa in the Ashanti Region. Illegal miners set up their camp less than 5 metres behind the walls of the Adansi Asokwa Agenda 111 Hospital. The Ashanti Regional Security Council moved in immediately after news of the activities surfaced in the media in the first week of July.
National Security, acting on the orders of REGSEC, has been supervising the reclamation of mined pits, which can be compared to the size of 30 standard football fields. The reclamation process has successfully restored over 80 percent of the degraded land. Deputy Regional Security Coordinator Alhaji Abdellah Umar stated that investigations into the operations of the gang have begun as the two are questioned. He defended the move to clamp down on illegal mining activities, saying, "We know it is very close to the Agenda 111 [project], and when we came, we still saw [illegal mining] as the reclamation was going on; we've still seen some around."
