Traditional authorities call for justice, calm in Sampa

The Sampa Traditional Area, nestled within the Jaman North District of the Bono Region, is a community steeped in rich cultural heritage. However, beneath the surface of tradition lies a decades-long chieftaincy dispute that has periodically erupted into violence, threatening the very fabric of the community. This dispute, concerning the rightful occupant of the Sampa stool, has drawn in various stakeholders, from local residents to regional and national authorities, each with their own perspectives and interests. The stability of Sampa, a town of considerable economic and cultural significance in the Bono Region, hangs in the balance.

Chieftaincy disputes are unfortunately not uncommon in Ghana, often stemming from complex interpretations of customary law, historical grievances, and competing claims to ancestral lineage. The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, a highly respected figure in Ghanaian traditional leadership, has also played a role in the selection and approval process. The Regional Security Council (REGSEC) and the District Security Council (DISEC) are tasked with maintaining peace and security in the area, but their impartiality has been called into question by some members of the community. The stakes are high for all involved. For the residents of Sampa, the dispute represents a threat to their safety and livelihoods. For the government, it poses a challenge to its authority and its ability to maintain stability. For the traditional leaders, it is a test of their ability to resolve conflicts peacefully and uphold the integrity of the chieftaincy institution.
