TAAG commissions mechanised water systems to combat neglected tropical diseases in Ahafo
Technology and Advocacy for African Growth (TAAG) has installed two mechanised boreholes to help curb the spread of Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) in Aweweho Manhyia and Akwaduro in the Tano North Municipality of the Ahafo Region. The Executive Director of TAAG, Isaac Kwabena Kakpeibe, explained that the lack of clean water has exposed residents to diseases such as bilharzia, buruli ulcer, and yaws. He said the organisation's decision to provide the mechanised systems forms part of a broader effort to eliminate neglected tropical diseases in the municipality.
The intervention is aimed at improving access to safe and potable water in the two communities, which have long struggled with inadequate water supply. Isaac Kwabena Kakpeibe added that access to potable water is a critical component in preventing such diseases and that TAAG is implementing multiple measures to support the fight against NTDs in the area. The Queen Mother of Aweweho Manhyia, Nana Kyeiwaa Adepah, and the Queen Mother of Akwaduro, Nana Yaa Amoakoa, expressed gratitude to the organisation for addressing a long-standing water challenge in their communities.
Nana Kyeiwaa Adepah and Nana Yaa Amoakoa noted that reliance on unsafe water sources had led to recurring cases of water-borne diseases, particularly among children. The two traditional leaders also assured that measures would be put in place to ensure the sustainability of the water systems so they continue to serve their intended purpose.
