Samreboi trial: Wontumi jailed for 20 years
Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, also known as Chairman Wontumi, was sentenced to 20 years' imprisonment by the Accra High Court after being found guilty in an illegal mining case. The sentence was handed down by Criminal Court 4 of the High Court, which convicted Chairman Wontumi, Akonta Mining Company Limited, and Kwame Antwi for unlawful mining activities on Akonta Mining Company Limited's concession at Samreboi in the Western Region.
Before the judgment, the court dismissed a defense application to halt proceedings and refer aspects of the case to the Supreme Court for constitutional interpretation, with Presiding judge Justice Audrey Kocuvie-Tay ruling the application lacked merit. The prosecution maintained that Akonta Mining and its officials engaged in illegal mining and facilitated unlawful operations, breaching Ghana's mining laws. Chairman Wontumi denied authorizing prosecution witness Henry Okum (PW2) for mining, insisting his agreement with Mr. Okum was solely for land reclamation and a coconut plantation.
