Sammi Awuku demands answers over alleged MV Sankofa vessel trafficking case
Sammi Awuku, Member of Parliament for Akuapem North, has raised concerns over the handling of a vessel linked to alleged drug trafficking. He questioned the circumstances surrounding the vessel, identified as MV Sankofa, which is reportedly under investigation in Senegal for alleged drug trafficking activities. He queried, "What date did the MV Sankofa enter Ghana's waters? What was the first point of call where the Ghana Maritime Authority conducted its investigation upon the ship's arrival? What flag was displayed on the ship? On what date was the vessel allowed entry, and was any arrest or enforcement action taken?"
Mr. Awuku also demanded clarity on whether any individuals or entities were prosecuted, as well as details of any sanctions, fines, or penalties imposed, including whether such fines have been paid. He raised concerns about the vessel's ownership and its contents, describing the matter as serious and requiring full transparency. He stated, "The Navy successfully arrested the vessel, but who requested its release? Additionally, records indicate that the fine has not been paid, and there appears to be no documentation confirming its payment."
Mr. Awuku indicated plans to file a Right to Information (RTI) request. He warned that he would make details public if authorities fail to provide satisfactory responses, saying, "I will file a request for information, but if the response is unsatisfactory, I will publish the entire report from the Navy. The Ghana Maritime Authority should be transparent and not withhold any information."
