Police seize 700 vehicles in crackdown on illegal sirens and beacon lights
The Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service impounded about 700 vehicles during a special operation in the Western Region aimed at eliminating the unlawful use of sirens, beacon lights, and strobe lights. The exercise, conducted in Takoradi and Tarkwa, also led to the removal of numerous unauthorised emergency warning devices, and seven illegally installed sirens were confiscated.
The operation is part of a nationwide campaign by the Ghana Police Service to enforce Regulations 65 and 74 of the Road Traffic Regulations, 2012 (L.I. 2180). Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Alexander Kwaku Obeng, Director of Education, Research and Training at the MTTD, stated that the operation was necessary due to growing disregard for the law by some motorists. He explained that the increasing use of sirens and emergency lights by unauthorised persons not only violated the law but also endangered other road users. ACP Obeng cautioned members of the public against fitting their vehicles with prohibited emergency equipment, stressing that the practice creates confusion on the roads and compromises public safety.
