Police launch manhunt for highway robbers after fatal attack at Ahyiresu
The Ashanti Regional Police Command has launched a manhunt for a group of armed robbers after a fatal attack at Ahyiresu. The incident occurred on Sunday, April 12, 2026, at about 10:30 p.m. along the Ahyiresu-Kwame Dwumor Sreso (KDS) road.
The robbers reportedly ambushed a VIP bus carrying about 30 football players and officials of Berekum Chelsea. The driver veered off the road into a bush while attempting to escape from six armed men, three of whom were wielding pump-action guns. Dominic Frimpong, a footballer, sustained gunshot wounds and was rushed to the Bibiani Government Hospital, where he later died. George Owusu Afriyie, 52 years old, was robbed of GH¢4,500. Police say two spent BB cartridges were retrieved from the scene to aid investigations.
The Regional Command has since deployed additional personnel and crime scene experts to track down the suspects, assuring the public that efforts are underway to bring the perpetrators to justice. Residents have been urged to remain calm and cooperate with the police as investigations continue.
