Otto Addo should have stepped down after AFCON qualification failure - Dr Nyaho-Tamakloe
Otto Addo was dismissed after Ghana's showing during the March international window. The Black Stars suffered consecutive defeats against Austria and Germany. The team endured a 5-1 defeat to Austria in Vienna, before falling 2-1 to Germany in Stuttgart.
Dr. Nyaho Nyaho-Tamakloe insisted that Otto Addo ought to have resigned following the Black Stars' failure to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). Addo had come under scrutiny after Ghana missed out on qualification for the 2025 AFCON in Morocco-marking the country's first absence from the tournament in over two decades. The Black Stars failed to win a single match during the qualifiers, managing three draws and three defeats. Despite that setback, the 50-year-old guided Ghana to secure qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Reacting to his dismissal, Dr. Nyaho-Tamakloe maintained that Addo should have taken responsibility earlier and stepped aside after the AFCON disappointment, saying "After he failed to qualify for the Africa Cup of Nations, I said to myself that he cannot handle the Black Stars." He described the decision to sack Addo as overdue, arguing that he should have resigned rather than wait to be dismissed, asserting "The decision is right and long overdue. He should have realised he wouldn't be able to handle the team and resigned after failing in key matches, rather than waiting to be sacked."
The Ghana Football Association is expected to name a new head coach in the coming days. This is ahead of the Black Stars' upcoming international friendlies against Mexico and Wales in May.
