One shot dead, chief and others sustain injuries in violent clash at Bibiani Anhwiaso galamsey site
Kwame Ayisi, 36-year-old man, was shot dead following a violent confrontation linked to illegal mining activities at Asawinso in the Bibiani Anhwiaso Bekwai Municipality. The incident occurred at the Afao Hill Forest Reserve. Nana Kwasi Ayim II, the chief of Sefwi Asawinso "A", and six others sustained gunshot injuries.
The chief and some youth from the community had gone to the forest to assess destruction allegedly caused by galamsey operators. Kwame Awudu, an eyewitness, said the chief engaged the miners in a calm discussion, appealing to them to stop their activities in the forest reserve. The group was allegedly ambushed by heavily built men believed to be linked to the illegal miners while returning from the site. The armed men reportedly opened fire on the group.
The victims were rushed to the Anhwiaso Community Hospital for treatment. Frank Nelson Ackah, the Assembly Member for the Asawinso "A" Electoral Area, confirmed the incident and described the attack as shocking and disturbing. Residents are calling for urgent security intervention to clamp down on illegal mining activities and restore calm in the area.
