New EU border system tripling time at passport control, airport boss says
Rome's main airport boss stated that the EU's new border system has nearly tripled the time it takes for Brits to get through passport control, even after improvements. Ryanair has warned passengers traveling to Europe this summer to prepare for extended waits. Border police at Portugal's Faro airport reported that the Entry Exit System technology suffered from bugs, but insisted any queues there would go down quickly.
The European Commission (EC) stated that in most EU airports disruption is limited and will continue to support member states in the system's implementation "to the fullest extent possible." The digital Entry Exit System (EES) requires non-EU citizens entering the 29 European countries of the Schengen area to register fingerprints and a photo upon arrival, with information checked upon departure. This process, phased in since October, often uses standalone, automated machines called "kiosks" or border officers for children under 12. Some European airports have experienced hours-long queues, with passengers reporting missed flights. Ryanair called it "the failed EES rollout" causing unnecessary delays and long queues, advising UK passengers to "allow extra time for their journey and be prepared for extended waits at passport control."
