More rain expected in Southwestern Ghana as GMet issues alert
The Ghana Meteorological Agency (GMet) has warned that rain-bearing clouds currently affecting the southeastern parts of the country are expected to persist and spread westward, bringing more thunderstorms and rainfall to the southwestern parts later today. In its afternoon weather forecast issued at 11:00 UTC on Monday, June 29, 2026, GMet stated, "As the day progresses, these clouds are expected to spread westward, bringing thunderstorms or rain to the southwestern parts of the country from this afternoon into the evening." For Northern Ghana, GMet said residents should expect intervals of sunshine, although thunderstorms and rainfall are likely over some parts of the northern sector from late afternoon into the evening.
This update follows hours of heavy rainfall on Monday morning, which triggered severe flooding in parts of Accra and surrounding communities. The flooding caused the Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo) and the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) to temporarily shut down power supply from the Mallam and Achimota primary substations as a safety precaution. The Ghana School of Law has rescheduled its examinations originally slated for Monday to Tuesday due to the weather conditions. The Ministry of the Interior has advised residents to avoid unnecessary movement and remain in safe locations, while the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) has activated emergency response teams in affected areas. GMet has urged the public to remain alert.
