Mayor unveils plans for modern 24-hour Agbogbloshie market, engages traders
Michael Kpakpo Allotey, the Mayor of Accra, unveiled plans for a modern 24-hour Agbogbloshie market during an engagement with traders. He introduced the contractor for the project and explained that the development forms part of government's 24-hour economy agenda aimed at creating an organised, safe and efficient environment where businesses can operate beyond the traditional trading hours. The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has begun engagements with traders ahead of the construction.
The project is expected to provide a modern trading facility that supports the needs of different categories of traders while improving sanitation, security and convenience within the market area. Facilities expected to be included are a police post, fire service post, clinic, pharmacy, daycare centre, bank, warehouses, cold stores, restaurants, food court, supermarket, poultry section, storage facilities and rest areas for traders who travel from outside Accra. Mr. Allotey urged traders to actively participate in the planning process by identifying their specific needs and submitting proposals to the Assembly and project consultants, citing yam trade as an example of differing business natures.
