Mahama Puts November 2027 Date On La General Hospital Reopening

President John Dramani Mahama has placed a clear timeline on the return of the La General Hospital, telling residents that the rebuilt facility should be ready for commissioning by November 2027.
The assurance came after the President inspected the reconstruction site with Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh. The visit was meant to assess progress on a project that has carried deep public interest in La and nearby communities since the old hospital was pulled down and redevelopment works later slowed.
For many residents, the pledge is more than a construction update. La General Hospital was a major source of accessible care for families in La and adjoining parts of Accra. Its closure pushed thousands of patients toward already busy facilities such as the 37 Military Hospital and Ridge Hospital, increasing pressure on two of the capital's most important health centres.
Mahama says momentum must be protected
President Mahama said government is treating the reconstruction as a priority because the absence of the hospital has affected healthcare access across the area. He expressed satisfaction with the pace of work on the site and said the renewed progress must be sustained if the November 2027 target is to be met.
"Government is fully committed to restoring healthcare access in this area. The closure of this facility has been difficult for the people of La, and we must maintain this momentum to meet our deadline," President Mahama said.
The President also commended the contractors for what he described as steady progress since 2025. His comments point to a project that had moved from public frustration to renewed activity after years of uncertainty over funding and payments.
The La General Hospital redevelopment has become one of the most closely watched health infrastructure projects in Accra because of its history. Redevelopment began in 2020, but the project later stalled, leaving residents without a key hospital for years. That delay became a regular concern for community members who had to travel farther for basic and emergency care.
Mahama framed the reconstruction as a necessary response to that disruption. He said restoring a functioning hospital in La would help reduce the strain on surrounding health facilities and improve access for people who have had to depend on hospitals outside their immediate community.
Burma Camp emergency centre to support care before completion
While the main hospital remains under construction, the President announced a plan to upgrade and repurpose the emergency centre at Burma Camp, which was developed during the COVID period. The facility is expected to be prepared to handle a range of emergency cases.
The move is intended to reduce delays in treatment for residents in the Accra East district and surrounding communities. Emergency care gaps can quickly become fatal when patients must travel long distances or move between full facilities. Government's plan is to use the Burma Camp centre as a practical support measure while work continues at La.
According to the President, the intervention fits into the wider Free Primary Healthcare policy, which places emphasis on prevention, early treatment and stronger community-level access. In practical terms, the La project and the Burma Camp emergency upgrade are being presented as part of the same effort: bringing care closer to communities and reducing avoidable pressure on the larger referral hospitals.
The temporary emergency support will not replace the need for the completed La General Hospital. It is, however, expected to offer relief in the interim, especially for urgent cases that require quick attention before referral decisions are made.
Health Minister says funding issues have been resolved
Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh said the delays that held back the project were tied to funding and payment challenges. He explained that those issues were resolved in 2025, allowing the reconstruction to resume at full capacity.
"The issues that plagued this project in the past have been resolved. We are now in a phase of consistent delivery," Mr Akandoh said.
The Minister added that the completed hospital will serve more than 50,000 residents in La and its environs. He said the facility is expected to provide a modern environment for patients and health workers, a point that matters in a community where the absence of a major hospital has shaped everyday healthcare decisions for nearly seven years.
The new La General Hospital is planned as a multi-storey, ultra-modern health facility. It is expected to include advanced diagnostic tools, maternity wings and specialised surgical theatres. These services are central to the project's public value because they go beyond basic outpatient care and bring more comprehensive health services back into the community.
- The hospital is targeted for commissioning in November 2027.
- The redevelopment began in 2020 but stalled over funding and payment delays.
- Outstanding financial issues were resolved in 2025, according to the Health Minister.
- The completed facility is expected to serve more than 50,000 residents.
- The Burma Camp emergency centre will be upgraded to support emergency care while construction continues.
For residents of La, the November 2027 deadline now gives the project a specific public test. The issue is no longer only whether work has resumed, but whether government and contractors can keep the pace through to completion. After years of pressure on families, health workers and nearby hospitals, the community will judge the project by delivery.
If the timeline holds, the reopening will restore a major health institution to one of Accra's oldest communities and ease a burden that has been shifted across the capital's healthcare system for years. The promise has been made on site, in public and with a date attached. La will now be watching the calendar.
