Komfo Anokye Blood Bank appeals for more donors amid fears of blood shortage due to rising road crashes
The Blood Bank at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) is appealing for voluntary blood donation to help avert a possible shortage, as the increasing number of road traffic accidents continues to put pressure on the facility's blood reserves. Officials state the blood bank uses more than 100 pints of blood every day. Kofi Adu Boateng, the Ashanti Zonal Organizer for Blood Donors, spoke to Adom News during a blood donation exercise at Osei Tutu Senior High School, stating, "We are appealing to churches, schools, corporate organizations, institutions and individuals to regularly donate blood to the Komfo Anokye Blood Bank. No one knows when they or a loved one may require an emergency blood transfusion, and a shortage could cost lives."
Mr. Boateng disclosed the exercise at Osei Tutu Senior High School yielded about 300 pints of blood, which would last the facility for only about two days. He noted this was the third blood donation exercise organized in schools. Some students who participated expressed willingness to continue donating blood. One student's decision to become a blood donor was inspired by a personal experience involving his mother.
