Kofi Adams denies government sponsorship for MPs at 2026 World Cup
Kofi Iddie Adams, Minister for Sports and Recreation, dismissed claims that government officials and political figures were sponsored to attend the 2026 FIFA World Cup, insisting that no preferential treatment was given in the allocation of tickets. The Buem MP stated, "No Member of Parliament, Minister of State or CEO was sponsored by government to the World Cup. We did not give any slots to any constituencies." He also apologized to Ghanaian fans in the diaspora, stating, "I want to apologise to Ghanaian fans in the diaspora if they didn't understand us well. They thought everybody who would walk to the stadium would get a ticket from us. We never said so."
His remarks followed the official end of the government's free World Cup ticket support initiative, which was limited to covering the group stage of the tournament and will not continue into the knockout phase. Adams maintained that the government's ticket distribution process was transparent and not influenced by political or constituency-based considerations. The Ghana Football Association has released two official supporter ticket categories for Ghana's Round of 32 clash against the Colombia national football team at Kansas City Stadium.
