Israel says it has killed Iran's security chief and Basij commander
Israel claims to have killed Ali Larijani, secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council, and Gholamreza Soleimani, commander of the internal Basij militia, with no confirmation or denial from Iran. The claim of Larijani's death was made on Tuesday by Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz. Iranian state media published a handwritten note by Larijani, though its authenticity as proof of life is unconfirmed.
The note, published on Larijani's social media pages, commemorates 84 Iranian sailors reportedly killed in a US attack on their naval ship in international waters. If confirmed, Larijani's death would be the highest-level killing since strikes on February 28 allegedly killed former Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and family members. Larijani was last seen publicly on Friday, attending the Al-Quds Day rally in Tehran with President Masoud Pezeshkian.
Israel Katz stated, apparently referring to the alleged killing, that "The leaders of the regime are being killed and their capabilities terminated." He added that the Israeli army is working "to continue to hit and terminate the missile capabilities as well as the strategic infrastructure." Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the alleged killing of Larijani was part of an effort to give Iranians a way to overthrow the government.
