Illegal mining tragedy: Four die after galamsey pit collapse at Skuumu
Four suspected illegal miners died after a galamsey pit collapsed on Wednesday, May 27, 2026, at Skuumu near Gyaman-Nkwanta in the Amansie Central District of the Ashanti Region. The incident occurred around 4:00 pm, leaving residents in shock and mourning.
The land was initially allocated to Volta Resource, a mining company, which allegedly handed the area over to illegal miners for mining activities. Logist Group Company Limited had later been tasked by the government to reclaim the degraded land. Despite ongoing reclamation efforts, the victims reportedly entered the abandoned mining pit to engage in illegal mining when it suddenly caved in, trapping them underground. Personnel from the Ghana Police Service and other security agencies were deployed to the scene to support rescue operations. An excavator was later brought in Wednesday evening to retrieve the bodies from the collapsed pit.
Sources identified the leader of the group as Solomon Amadevor, while the identities of the other three deceased persons are yet to be officially released pending investigations. The tragic incident has reignited concerns over illegal mining activities and the rising number of fatalities linked to unsafe galamsey operations across the country.
