Illegal Miners Are My Worst Enemies; I'll Fight Them -Akyemansa DCE
Linda Ahenkora, the District Chief Executive (DCE) for Akyemansa in the Eastern Region, has declared illegal miners her "worst enemies" and vowed to intensify efforts to curb their activities. Since assuming office, the Akyemansa District Assembly has confiscated over 300 Changfang and pumping machines, 105 boats, and arrested over 50 individuals involved in illegal mining, also known as galamsey. This clampdown is part of a broader strategy to tackle the environmental devastation caused by illegal mining activities in the district.
The DCE explained that the Assembly is working closely with security agencies and the Blue Water Guards to combat illegal mining operations. George Gyasi, the Operations Commander of the Blue Water Guards in Akyemansa, stated that their operations began on January 5 of this year. The task force has already carried out several operations, particularly around the Pra River and Birim River, seizing numerous illegal mining machines, including Changfang and pumping equipment.
Mr. Gyasi refuted reports that confiscated equipment had been returned to illegal miners, describing the claims as false. Authorities in Akyemansa say the Assembly, in collaboration with security agencies, will sustain the crackdown on illegal mining to restore degraded lands, protect water sources, and safeguard the health and livelihoods of residents.
