I'll Model Ghana Police After Scotland Yard, NYPD -IGP
Inspector General of Police (IGP) Christian Tetteh Yohuno revealed his vision to transform the Ghana Police Service into a world-class institution, drawing inspiration from the New York Police Department (NYPD) and Scotland Yard, in an exclusive interview with *The Chronicle*. IGP Yohuno stated his ambition to elevate the service to international standards, emphasizing professionalism, confidence, and investigative prowess. He wants the Ghana Police to "dress, walk with confidence like NYPD and conduct investigations like Scotland Yard."
IGP Yohuno highlighted specific aspects of the NYPD and Scotland Yard that he aims to emulate. He noted the NYPD's "data-driven approach to crime management, tracking crime statistics and holding commanders accountable," as well as its community policing strategies and counter-terrorism intelligence bureau. He also emphasized Scotland Yard's "exceptional investigative capabilities," its "wealth of knowledge and expertise in handling complex cases," and its "advanced forensic capabilities" with "access to cutting-edge technology and techniques." The Ghana Police Service is currently the first in Africa to have a liaison officer attached to the NYPD and vice-versa.
Regarding personnel, IGP Yohuno welcomed President John Dramani Mahama’s proposed increase in recruitment, stating that the service needs more personnel to be visible across the country. He also addressed the issue of accommodation, stating that personnel are paid rent allowances. The administration has decided to post personnel to all four hundred (400) districts to bridge the "no-personnel" syndrome.
