I only saw my mom in the mortuary - Son of woman killed in New Town building tragedy
The son of a woman killed in the New Town building tragedy shared a heartbreaking account of how he received the news on Monday, March 30, 2026, speaking with Accra-based TV3. He narrated that his mother was at home on Sunday morning when he left for church around 7 AM. He said, "I only got to see my mom in the mortuary."
The young man explained that he received several calls from his siblings while in a church meeting and was informed about the collapse of the building where his mother had gone for service. His 17-year-old sister, who usually attends that church on Sundays, refused to go that day. His mother left home in anger and went to church alone. The building that collapsed was the Accra New Town Experimental D/A School building. He said his mother was 58, a devoted Christian, cheerful, and loved by many.
So far, three people have been confirmed dead following the collapse. The young man said his sister has been crying ever since, watching videos and pictures of their mother on her phone, talking to her as if she were still alive.
