I have reason to doubt Hanan's medical excuse - Deputy AG to Court
Hanan Abdul-Wahab, former National Food Buffer Stock Company (NAFCo) boss, failed to appear in court today when his criminal trial was called. His lawyers presented a medical document stating he had been admitted to a health facility, but Deputy Attorney General Dr Justice Srem Sai told the High Court he had "reason to doubt" the medical excuse. Dr Srem Sai argued the document did not provide sufficient details, containing "no diagnosis or medical condition," and merely stated Mr Hannan had been admitted.
The prosecution's doubts follow Hannan Abdul-Wahab's recent arrest by Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) officials at the airport, after he was granted leave to travel outside the country. The arrest followed intelligence suggesting he had attempted to empty his bank account before travelling, which heightened concerns he might not return to Ghana for trial. Mr Adul Wahab Hanan is facing corruption-related charges, including stealing and causing financial loss to the state amounting to over GH¢70 million.
