Haruna Iddrisu inaugurates committee for New Public Universities
Haruna Iddrisu inaugurated a committee to oversee the establishment of new public universities across the country. The inauguration took place on Wednesday, April 15. According to Mr. Iddrisu, "Higher education remains a critical public good and a national necessity," and "Many young Ghanaians still face challenges in accessing quality tertiary education across the country."
The committee will advise the government on expanding access to tertiary education and is expected to submit its report to the Vice President, Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang. The formation of the committee follows a directive from the President, upon the request of the Vice President, to develop a strategic roadmap for the creation of additional public universities. Christina Amoako-Nuama, Chairperson of the committee and former Minister for Education, described the initiative as both timely and forward-looking.
The committee's mandate includes completing ongoing infrastructure projects and expanding existing tertiary institutions. Ms. Amoako-Nuama said, "The task ahead is ambitious but necessary," and "It presents a significant opportunity to widen access to higher education and strengthen the country's human capital development." The committee is expected to play a key role in guiding government policy on tertiary education expansion in the coming years.
