GRIDCo Begins Probe Into Nationwide Power Outage …Engineers race to restore electricity after pre-dawn system disturbance

Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) launched emergency restoration efforts and a technical investigation after a major disturbance on the national electricity transmission system on Wednesday, July 29, 2026, at approximately 3:11 a.m., plunged large parts of Ghana into darkness. The incident caused the simultaneous tripping of some generating plants connected to the National Interconnected Transmission System, resulting in widespread power interruptions. GRIDCo stated, "Our engineers and system operators are working continuously, in close collaboration with power sector stakeholders to restore power within the shortest time possible without compromising safety."

Engineers and system operators activated established system restoration procedures and were working with other stakeholders to restore electricity. GRIDCo stressed that restoring power safely remained its top priority. The company commenced a comprehensive technical investigation to establish the exact cause of the disturbance. The outcome of the investigation is expected to determine what triggered the widespread outage and guide any corrective measures needed to prevent a recurrence. GRIDCo apologised to the public for the inconvenience caused.
