GNFS rescues two girls trapped in fire at late Dr Murtala Mohammed's family house
The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) rescued two young girls trapped in a fire outbreak at the family house of the late Tamale Central Member of Parliament, Dr. Murtala Mohammed, at Dohinna Yili in Tamale. Firefighters from the Tamale Teaching Hospital Fire Station responded to a distress call received at 15:29hrs on Wednesday, August 6, 2026, involving a fire outbreak at the 17-room compound house. A crew of seven firefighters was dispatched at 15:30hrs and arrived at the scene at 15:37hrs. The two girls were successfully rescued in good health, with no casualties recorded.
The fire was brought under control at 17:56hrs and completely extinguished at 18:07hrs. Nine out of the 17 rooms in the compound house were badly affected, while eight rooms and their contents were salvaged. Dr. Murtala Mohammed was among the eight state officials who died in the August 6, 2025, helicopter crash in the Ashanti Region. Investigations into the cause of the fire have commenced.
