GNFS contains tanker fire after deadly crash on Akosombo-Tema highway
Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) successfully contained a tanker fire following a fatal road crash at Teye Kwame on the Akosombo-Tema Highway in the early hours of June 28, 2026. A distress call was received at 0441 hours by the Somanya Municipal Fire Station, leading to the deployment of a five-member crew led by Station Officer II Oteng. Firefighters arrived to find an overturned tanker fully engulfed in flames, mounted a foam attack, brought the blaze under control at 0558 hours, and completely extinguished it by 0603 hours.
Tragically, one male, believed to be the driver, was found burnt beyond recognition, and the driver's mate sustained severe burns, being rushed to the Akuse Hospital. The tanker was completely destroyed. The cause of the crash has not yet been determined, as investigators state extensive damage and limited information are hampering early conclusions. The GNFS says further investigations are underway.
