Ghana's borders not for illicit drug trafficking - NACOC warns neighbouring countries
The Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) warned neighboring countries and individuals involved in drug trafficking that Ghana's borders will not be used as a transit route for illicit drugs. Alexander Barimah Twum, Deputy Director of NACOC, stated on Monday, July 27, on Joy FM's Super Morning Show, that Ghana's borders are open for legitimate trade and economic activities, but not for illegal drug transportation. He said, "Interestingly, anytime we make such an arrest of drug sailors, all that you will hear is that it is going to Niger or it is going to Burkina Faso. Our borders are not the gateway for illicit drug transit."
Mr. Barimah Twum noted that authorities often encounter situations where arrested drug traffickers claim substances are being transported to neighboring countries and are not intended for the Ghanaian market. He added that Ghana's land and sea borders are not gateways for illicit drug transit. To tighten borders, NACOC signed an MoU with the government of Burkina Faso "Just about a month or two ago." This MoU aims to prevent anything illicit, such as drug trafficking, across their shared borders, with both countries ensuring nothing enters from their respective ends.
