Ghanaian paediatric oncologist Dr. Emmanuella Amoako wins 2026 Roux Prize

Dr. Emmanuella Amoako, a Ghanaian paediatric oncologist, has been named the recipient of the 2026 Roux Prize, becoming the first Ghanaian to win the global award for outstanding contributions to population health. The award, announced by the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) at the University of Washington, recognizes individuals who demonstrate exceptional use of health evidence and data to improve the lives of populations. As part of the recognition, Dr. Amoako will receive a US$100,000 prize for her contribution to improving population health through evidence-based approaches.

Dr. Amoako was honored for her work in advancing childhood cancer care, specifically efforts aimed at promoting early diagnosis, improving access to treatment, and strengthening survival outcomes for children diagnosed with cancer. Her work has focused significantly on strengthening paediatric oncology services at the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital. IHME said her contribution illustrates the importance of translating health data and locally generated evidence into practical interventions, particularly in resource-constrained settings. The Roux Prize was established in 2013 by philanthropists David and Barbara Roux.
