Ghana School Feeding Programme completes nationwide training to improve quality of school meals
Ghana School Feeding Programme has completed the second phase of its nationwide practical training for caterers and head cooks, as part of efforts "to improve the quality of meals served to school children." The month-long exercise was held in February 2026. Teams from the GSFP Secretariat engaged caterers and head cooks across 13 regions.
This follows an earlier phase conducted in December 2025, which covered the Bono, Volta and Oti regions. The training equipped caterers with modern cooking techniques and safe food handling practices. The initiative also seeks to enhance the nutritional value of meals while promoting the use of locally sourced food items to support local agriculture. Participants were taken through hands-on sessions on portion control using practical measurement methods, the effective use of soya beans as a cost-effective and nutritious protein source, as well as food hygiene, safety standards and proper kitchen management.
The GSFP has maintained that continuous capacity-building for caterers remains critical to achieving its objective of providing healthy meals to school children across the country. The programme also continues to collaborate with key stakeholders, including the Ghana Education Service and the Women in Agricultural Development Directorate of the Ministry of Food and Agriculture, to ensure the delivery of safe, nutritious meals to beneficiary pupils nationwide.
