Ghana, Burkina Faso lift trade restrictions on eggs and tomatoes
Ghana secured the removal of restrictions on the export of eggs to Burkina Faso and the importation of tomatoes from the neighboring country following bilateral talks aimed at strengthening trade relations. This breakthrough was reached after a high-level Ghanaian delegation, led by the Minister for Trade, Agribusiness and Industry, Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare, and the Minister for Food and Agriculture, Eric Opoku, held discussions with Burkinabe authorities on Friday, July 17.
In a joint statement, the two ministries said the agreement comes as a major relief for Ghanaian poultry farmers and egg exporters, particularly those in the Dormaa area, whose businesses had been affected by the restrictions imposed by Burkina Faso. The restrictions were introduced by Burkinabe authorities as a precautionary measure over quality concerns regarding eggs imported from some exporting countries. As part of the agreement, Ghana and Burkina Faso will establish a Joint Technical Committee to facilitate smooth trade and swiftly address any future trade-related concerns. The two countries also agreed to work towards the signing of a Bilateral Trade Agreement.
