GFA eyes additional friendly game as Carlos Queiroz begins Black Stars rebuild ahead of World Cup
Carlos Queiroz begins Black Stars rebuild ahead of World Cup as the Ghana Football Association (GFA) eyes an additional friendly game. The Ghana Black Stars could line up a fifth international friendly as part of their build-up to the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Ghana had initially announced four pre-tournament matches following qualification for the global showpiece. A heavy 5-1 defeat to Austria in Vienna and a 2-1 loss to Germany in Stuttgart led to Otto Addo's dismissal. Queiroz has since been appointed on a short-term deal, pending a post-World Cup review. Confirmed fixtures against Mexico and Wales are scheduled for May and June respectively. Officials believe the two remaining matches may not be sufficient for the experienced Portuguese coach to fully implement his tactical ideas and shape the squad ahead of the tournament in the United States, Canada and Mexico. The Black Stars will feature at their fifth World Cup in Group L, opening their campaign against Panama on June 17, followed by fixtures against England on June 23 and Croatia on June 27.
Queiroz is expected to arrive in Ghana this week for his official unveiling, accompanied by five members of his technical team. He will also be formally introduced to Sports Minister Kofi Adams as part of protocol arrangements. Following his unveiling, the 73-year-old is set to take charge of the team for the friendly against Mexico, before the final warm-up clash against Wales on June 2.
