Galamsey: Three arrested along Birim River
Three people have been arrested for allegedly engaging in illegal mining activities at Asomdwe along the Birim River in Akyem Oda in the Birim Central Municipality of the Eastern Region. The arrests are part of ongoing efforts to clamp down on illegal mining, known as galamsey.
Member of Parliament for Akyem Oda, Alexander Akwasi Acquah, commended security agencies for the arrests but stressed the need for sustained enforcement. Mr. Acquah raised concerns over a previous anti-galamsey operation, alleging that on November 16, 2025, the MCE led an operation where three suspects - Mawuli, Yeboah, and Adamu - were arrested and mining equipment seized. He alleged the confiscated equipment was not handed over to the police and the three suspects were later released without prosecution, claiming the MCE demanded money from them.
