Fugitive Dezi Freeman shot dead by Australian police after seven months in hiding
Dezi Freeman was shot dead by Australian police on Monday morning after spending seven months on the run. Freeman gunned down two police officers in Porepunkah last August. Victorian Premier Jacinta Allan said, "Today an evil man is dead. It's over."
Police surrounded a building around 5:30 local time. After three hours, a man believed to be Freeman came outside and was shot dead. Police believe Freeman emerged wrapped in a blanket and armed with a gun. No officers were hurt during the operation. The squad sent to Freeman's property on August 26 was there to search it over an investigation into sex offences, when Neal Thompson and Vadim de Waart were killed by Freeman. Freeman, whose real name was Desmond Filby, was a self-described "sovereign citizen".
Detectives will now focus on working out who gave him aid. It would take 24 to 48 hours to confirm the identity of the body. The police shooting will be investigated.
