From oil executive to Ghana's cable king
Tony Oteng-Gyasi resigned from British Petroleum's Ghana operation in 1986, not because anything had gone wrong, but because he wanted to build something of his own. He was born on February 15, 1955, and studied Economics and Law at the University of Ghana, graduating in 1975. His first job was national service at the Research Department of the Bank of Ghana, before joining British Petroleum's Ghana operation for nine years, rising through executive marketing roles and picking up a marketing diploma from the UK.
His first company was Tropical Products Limited. In 1997, he founded Tropical Cable and Conductor Limited, a wholly Ghanaian-owned cable manufacturer that became the first in the country to earn ISO 9001 certification. In 2007, he built Western Rod & Wire Limited, setting up the only continuous casting and rolling factory for EC Grade Aluminium Rod in West Africa, a plant that now supplies raw material to conductor manufacturers across the region. He received the Empretec Star Award in 2000 and Marketing Man of the Year in 2005.
