Former GBA president weighs in on NPP Chairmanship race
Yaw Acheampong Boafo, former President of the Ghana Bar Association (GBA), stated on Monday, March 23, 2026, on Fakye TV that he prefers either Boakye Agyarko or Paul Afoko to become the National Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP). According to him, "If Paul Afoko is contesting Boakye Agyarko, in my view, either of the two is good."
Yaw Acheampong Boafo said that the party must avoid a situation where the flagbearer becomes dominant over its leadership. He recalled that during the administration of former President John Agyekum Kufuor, the party maintained a healthy balance between its leadership and the presidency. He said, "I don't want a situation where the flagbearer overshadows the party leadership because that weakens the internal structures of the party. What we saw during former President Kufuor's time was a party that had strong, independent leadership, with figures like Haruna Esseku and Odoi-Sykes playing key roles without undue interference. That is the kind of system I believe we should preserve moving forward."
Paul Afoko, a former National Chairman of the NPP, has declared his intention to contest for the position. In a statement titled "Declaration of Intention to Contest the National Chairmanship Position of theNew Patriotic Party," he said his decision follows extensive reflection and encouragement from party members and stakeholders calling for renewed leadership. Afoko joins a growing list of aspirants seeking to lead the party, including Ashanti Regional Chairman Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi; former General Secretary John Boadu; and former Energy Minister Boakye Agyarko, among others.
