Five arrested over alleged human trafficking; 18 rescued at Kwabenya
The Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service arrested five people for alleged human trafficking and cyber-enabled criminal activities on July 12, 2026, at Kwabenya in Accra. The operation, led by the Cybercrime Unit, Anti-Human Trafficking Unit, and CID Headquarters Operations Unit, resulted in the rescue of 18 Nigerian nationals. Director-General of the CID, Commissioner of Police Lydia Yaako Donkor, stated on Wednesday, July 21, 2026, that these arrests were part of four major operations targeting cyber-enabled fraud, human trafficking, and illicit firearms trafficking.
The suspects were identified as Chigozi Azubuike (35), Edwin Onyema (24), Kingsley Nwanchukwu (29), Henry Ebuke (32), and Harrison Godwin (26). Police retrieved 52 assorted mobile phones and several wireless internet devices believed to be used for cybercrime. Intelligence gathered on July 11 indicated a group of young Nigerians had been trafficked into Ghana and forced to engage in cybercrime in a residential apartment at Kwabenya. The 18 rescued Nigerian nationals, aged between 15 and 24, were allegedly trafficked from Nigeria.
