Fire guts late Murtala Mohammed's family home, destroys nine rooms
Murtala Mohammed's family home in Tamale was affected by a fire that destroyed nine of its 17 rooms on Wednesday, August 5. The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) received a distress call at 3:29 p.m. and firefighters arrived at the scene eight minutes later at 3:37 p.m. According to Northern Regional Public Relations Officer of the GNFS, ADO I Hudu Baba, firefighters rescued two schoolchildren who had become trapped in one of the rooms before bringing the fire under control.
ADO I Hudu Baba noted that while the fire destroyed nine rooms, efforts by firefighters prevented it from spreading to the remaining sections of the house. The GNFS has launched an investigation to determine the cause of the fire and assess the full extent of the damage. Murtala Mohammed was among the eight people who lost their lives in a military helicopter crash in the Adansi area of the Ashanti Region on August 6, 2025. The victims were traveling from Accra to the Ashanti Region on an official assignment when the helicopter crashed.
