FDA confiscates fish after viral video exposes unhygienic handling practices
The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) confiscated smoked and salted (dried) fish exposed to unhygienic conditions after a viral video raised concerns about unsafe fish processing practices. In a press release issued on Tuesday, July 28, the FDA said it swiftly deployed a rapid response team to the location on Monday, July 27, in collaboration with the Tema Metropolitan Assembly and the Ghana Police Service. The inspection led to the immediate confiscation of fish exposed to unhygienic conditions, while the fish processors involved were educated on the public health risks associated with poor handling practices.
The FDA noted that similar incidents have occurred intermittently in the past and said it has consistently worked with relevant agencies to protect public health through education and enforcement. It further announced plans to intensify engagement with fish processors and fishmongers in the affected coastal districts to promote good hygiene practices and improve food safety standards. The Authority advised the public to purchase smoked and dried fish only from reputable and hygienic sources, carefully inspect fish before buying, and avoid products with offensive odours, unusual colouring, visible contamination or signs of spoilage. Consumers were also encouraged to wash smoked or dried fish thoroughly before cooking and ensure it is properly cooked before consumption. The FDA urged the public to report any suspected unhygienic food processing, storage or sale to the nearest FDA office or local assembly.
