Farmland dispute: one killed six, injured in Krachi Nchumuru
Farmland dispute left one person dead and six others injured in the Krachi Nchumuru District of the Oti Region. The incident occurred between the Konkomba communities of Wurenja and Beposo. Several houses belonging to the Nchumuru people were burned, displacing residents.
Mr Martin Kofi Anato, the District Chief Executive (DCE) of Krachi Nchumuru, disclosed to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) that the conflict involved two Konkomba communities disputing ownership of a piece of farmland. The District Security Committee (DISEC), in collaboration with traditional authorities, had earlier directed both parties to refrain from farming on the land until a final determination was made. Mr. Anato said one of the factions allegedly defied the directive and proceeded to cultivate the land, triggering a violent reprisal from the opposing group. The body of the deceased has been deposited at the Kete-Krachi Government Hospital morgue, while the injured were receiving treatment at St. Luke's Hospital in Chinderi.
Mr Anato gave assurance that "We have deployed security personnel to the area to maintain peace and order, and we are working closely with traditional leaders to resolve the matter amicably." He appealed to the feuding communities to exercise restraint and allow due process to take its course. He cautioned that individuals engaging in further acts of violence would face the full rigours of the law.
