ECOWAS delegation studies NPA's fuel quality standards framework
ECOWAS Commission delegation commenced a three-day study tour in Ghana on Monday to understudy the National Petroleum Authority's (NPA) regulatory framework on fuel quality standards. The visit is part of efforts to strengthen downstream petroleum regulation and promote the implementation of harmonised fuel quality standards across the West African sub-region. The delegation is made up of regulators and officials from institutions responsible for managing the downstream petroleum sector in ECOWAS member states.
Godwin Kudzo Tameklo, Chief Executive of the NPA, welcomed the team and stated that Ghana's fuel quality assurance framework provides valuable lessons for the region. He stressed that while member states can adopt best practices, each country must tailor regulatory approaches to suit its unique national circumstances. Arkadius Koumoine, Acting Director of Energy and Mines at the ECOWAS Commission, responded on behalf of the delegation, saying that harmonised fuel quality standards are critical to protecting public health, safeguarding the environment, improving energy security, and addressing illicit fuel trade within the region.
