ECOWAS backs $25bn Nigeria-Morocco Gas Pipeline as Africa pushes energy integration
ECOWAS endorsed the legal and institutional framework for the $25bn Nigeria-Morocco Gas Pipeline on Sunday in Freetown, Sierra Leone, during the summit of Heads of State and Government. The 6,800-kilometre pipeline is expected to transport Nigerian natural gas along Africa's Atlantic coastline to Morocco, with the potential to supply European markets through existing connections. The project was launched after a 2016 meeting between Morocco's King Mohammed VI and former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari.
Moroccan officials state the pipeline reflects King Mohammed VI's vision of a more integrated and energy-secure Africa, built around shared infrastructure and regional cooperation. The project is being developed by Morocco's National Office of Hydrocarbons and Mines (ONHYM) and the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC). Further arrangements are expected to be concluded in Morocco involving Morocco, Nigeria, and Mauritania. The next phase will focus on establishing management structures, including a dedicated project company expected to be based in Casablanca and a Pipeline Higher Authority to be headquartered in Abuja.
