Deputy Health Minister reveals 986 pregnant women died in 2024
Deputy Minister for Health, Dr Grace Ayensu-Danquah, disclosed on Thursday, August 6, during the Maternal Mortality Action and Response Programme tour in Accra, that 986 pregnant women died in Ghana in 2024. She stated, "In 2024, 986 pregnant women died." The country's maternal mortality ratio stands at 235 deaths per 100,000 live births.
Dr Ayensu-Danquah described maternal mortality as a major public health challenge and stressed that no woman should lose her life while giving birth. She noted that reducing preventable maternal deaths remains one of the government's top priorities. The exercise aims to assess the quality of maternal healthcare services, identify gaps in the health system, and develop interventions to improve outcomes for mothers. The government will address infrastructure and equipment challenges at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital.
