Defilement suspect dies in custody
Emmanuel Cudjoe, a 38-year-old carpenter, reportedly died by suicide on Sunday while in police custody at the Agyeikrom Police Station in Elmina. He was arrested for allegedly defiling his 11-year-old daughter. According to a statement issued by the Central Regional Police Command, Cudjoe "used a strip torn from the edge lining of a blanket he had been given to sleep with to carry out the act." He was reportedly found hanging against the wall of the cell at about 1100 hours, approximately six hours after his arrest.
Officers from the Elmina District Police Command and the Regional Crime Scene Management team responded to the incident and observed no visible marks of violence on the body. "The body was seen suspended from the ground using the torn edge lining of the blanket he slept on. The ligature was observed firmly fastened around the neck," the statement said. The body was sent to the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital, where he was pronounced dead by the medical officer on duty.
The remains have been deposited at the hospital's morgue for preservation and autopsy. Police said the relatives of the deceased had been informed, adding that investigations into the incident were ongoing.
