Convoy carrying Russian fighters attacked in Mali, sources say
Convoy carrying Russian fighters was attacked in northern Mali on Thursday, according to three security sources and a spokesperson for an armed group. One source stated the convoy was transporting more than 200 Russian fighters and over 100 Malian soldiers. The convoy was en route to the northern town of Anefis, where fighting has persisted since Saturday, July 4, when it came under fire early on Thursday.
A spokesperson for the Azawad Liberation Front (FLA) claimed responsibility for the attack. Niger, an ally to Mali, provided air support during the fighting. A similar attack hit another military convoy headed north earlier this week. The FLA and the Al Qaeda affiliate Jama'at Nusrat al-Islam wal Muslimin (JNIM) staged attacks on army positions across Mali on Saturday, July 4. Africa Corps is supporting Mali's military in the fight against insurgencies.
