Central Region floods: 58 houses collapsed, 18 people killed - Interior Minister
Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, the Minister for the Interior, disclosed on Tuesday, June 30, to Parliament that 18 people lost their lives and 58 houses collapsed in the Central Region following torrential rains that hit parts of the region about two weeks prior. He stated, "In the Central Region, Mr Speaker, in the last two weeks, we had 58 houses that collapsed." He also added, "Unfortunately, there too we lost 18 individuals, as per the report that was sent to me in Cape Coast."
The Minister explained that the destruction in the Central Region occurred prior to Monday's floods in Greater Accra. He attributed the scale of destruction partly to the nature and age of buildings in many communities, noting that some mud and brick structures were over 100 years old and unable to withstand the prolonged rainfall. The government, through the Interior Minister, conveyed condolences from President John Dramani Mahama to families who lost relatives in the recent flood disasters.
