Brobbey scores late winner for Sunderland at Newcastle
Brian Brobbey scored a dramatic winner in the 90th-minute at St James’ Park. Brobbey converted "a rebound from close range after Ramsdale saved his first attempt."
Anthony Gordon gave Newcastle United a ninth-minute lead. Gordon's goal was his 17th of the season. Luke O’Nien’s pass was intercepted by Nick Woltemade, who passed to Gordon. Sven Botman headed against the post. The match was paused early in the second half by referee Anthony Taylor because of reports of discriminatory abuse from the crowd towards Sunderland’s Lutsharel Geertruida. The delay lasted three minutes. Chemsdine Talbi fired in the rebound to equalize in the 57th minute after Dan Burn cleared Brobbey's chested ball off the line. Noah Sadiki had a chance to put Sunderland ahead, but shot at Ramsdale. Lewis Hall was one of five Newcastle players to be included in Thomas Tuchel’s latest England squad. Aaron Ramsdale was also called up by Tuchel. Granit Xhaka spoke to Taylor during the delay.
The result gives Sunderland their first league double over Newcastle since 2014-15.
